About XBM

X BitMap

A black and white image format from the X Window System, stored as C source code so it can be compiled straight into a program. Use it for X11 cursors and icons; convert from it to see the image in a normal viewer.

About DDS

DirectDraw Surface

Microsoft's DirectX texture container. It usually stores GPU-compressed data (the DXT or BCn formats) with mipmaps, so a graphics card can load it without decoding. Convert to DDS for game textures and mods; convert from it to view or edit a texture.
