About BMP
Windows Bitmap
Microsoft's bitmap format, which usually stores pixels uncompressed, so files are large for their dimensions. Almost every Windows program can read it. Convert to BMP when an older Windows tool or embedded device only accepts it; convert away from it to save space.
About DDS
DirectDraw Surface
Microsoft's DirectX texture container. It usually stores GPU-compressed data (the DXT or BCn formats) with mipmaps, so a graphics card can load it without decoding. Convert to DDS for game textures and mods; convert from it to view or edit a texture.
