Waveform Audio File Format
A RIFF-based audio format from Microsoft and IBM, released in 1991, that almost always holds uncompressed PCM. CD-quality stereo takes about 10 MB per minute. Use it for editing, mastering and tools that want uncompressed audio; convert away from it to save space.
About MP3
MPEG-1 Audio Layer III
A lossy audio format developed largely at the Fraunhofer Institute and standardized as part of MPEG-1 in 1993. Its patents expired in 2017, and typical bitrates run from 128 to 320 kbps. Use it when audio has to play everywhere: car stereos, old MP3 players, any phone or browser.
