About XPM
X PixMap
The color successor to XBM, storing an image as a C array of strings with a text color table. Early Linux and Unix desktops used it for icons. Use it for X11 programs and older Linux desktops that expect XPM icons.

The grayscale member of the Netpbm family: uncompressed pixels after a short text header. Use it to feed grayscale images to computer vision and image-processing code that reads Netpbm.
