About PNG
Portable Network Graphics
A lossless raster format published in 1996 as a patent-free replacement for GIF. It compresses with DEFLATE and supports full alpha transparency. Use it for screenshots, logos and graphics with sharp edges or text, where JPG compression would leave visible artifacts.
About HDR
Radiance HDR
The HDR format from the Radiance renderer, storing each pixel as red, green and blue values with a shared exponent byte, so it holds a far wider brightness range than 8-bit images. Most HDRI environment maps ship in this format. Use it to light 3D scenes, or convert from it to get an ordinary 8-bit preview.
