About MP3
MPEG-1 Audio Layer III
A lossy audio format developed largely at the Fraunhofer Institute and standardized as part of MPEG-1 in 1993. Its patents expired in 2017, and typical bitrates run from 128 to 320 kbps. Use it when audio has to play everywhere: car stereos, old MP3 players, any phone or browser.
About OPUS
Opus
An open, royalty-free lossy codec standardized by the IETF as RFC 6716 in 2012, built for speech and music at low bitrates. WebRTC calls and WhatsApp voice notes use it, usually inside an Ogg container. Use it for the smallest files at good quality for voice, podcasts or music, when the player supports it.
