About JPG
JPEG (Joint Photographic Experts Group)
A lossy image format standardized in 1992 that shrinks photos by discarding detail the eye is less likely to notice. It has no transparency, and each re-save loses a little more quality. Use it for photos you want to share or upload, since nearly every device, browser and app opens it.
About JXL
JPEG XL
An image format standardized as ISO/IEC 18181 in 2022, with lossy and lossless modes, HDR and alpha. It can repack an existing JPG losslessly into a file about 20 percent smaller. Use it for archiving photos or for apps that support it; browser support is limited, so check before using it on the web.
